Cork County Council urge continued care as clean up continues

The aftermath of Storm Ellen continues to be tackled by emergency services with a number of trees still down across the county and the unsettled weather is not over yet with a weather advisory for unseasonably wet and windy weather in place until 9pm tonight, Friday.

Cork County Council’s Emergency Out of Hours number responded to 39 calls overnight on Thursday, primarily in relation in relation to fallen trees and debris on roads.

Among the damage caused, the Barleycove beach pontoon has been closed due to need for repairs and Fermoy Town Park also remains closed due to fallen trees and debris.

Due to high spring tides accompanied by coastal surge, some road flooding occurred during high tide at a number of locations on Thursday evening and minor fluvial flooding occurred on the R587 at Ardcahan, Dunmanway.

Cork County Council crews have cleared a large number of fallen trees following Storm Ellen on Wednesday night; however, the local authority has warned that additional trees and debris have blocked several roads across the county overnight.

As Council crews continue to work to clear these routes, road s are advised to exercise caution and be aware of debris, loose branches, fallen trees and areas of spot flooding on roads.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution during heavy rain, not to drive through floodwaters and be conscious of cyclists and pedestrians The Dursey Cable Car is operating as normal today and phone lines at Cork County Council’s Local Offices in Carrigaline, Youghal and Charleville are now fully operational.

County property owners are encouraged to examine trees withing their property for damage as following the recent weather events, trees have been weakened and remain susceptible to further damage.
