Famous Cork tree set to live on in art projects after falling during Storm Ellen

The famous monkey puzzle tree that stood for over 145 years in Mahon, that was felled recently, will live on through a number of different projects underway, it has been revealed.
The landmark tree came crashing down recently as a result of the violent gusts associated with Storm Ellen.
Local area rep for Labour Peter Horgan, said the tree will live on through a number of different projects.

“This tree has been a poignant staple of the skyline for decades in Mahon and one of the last links in the area to William Crawford,” said Mr Horgan.
“I’m very glad that, thanks to the efforts of O’Callaghan Properties, the original tree was saved to continue life in different ways through art, wood turning and sculptures.
“I’m also happy to say that another monkey puzzle has been identified on Skehard Road, aged about 50 years and also in Rochestown and one in Beaumont,” he added.
“It makes sense that the seeds from Crawford’s tree would spread.
“The work of Dr Eoin Lettice in UCC is going to be of great benefit to the story behind this piece of history.
“I look forward to the artists producing work that can live on in the community.”
