A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a man in his 30s in Cork.

The incident happened shortly before 10pm on Monday at commercial premises in North Main Street, Youghal.

The man, who has been named locally as Daniel (Dano) O’Sullivan, was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment and was later pronounced dead.

The case was upgraded to a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination by the assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster on Tuesday, the results of which gardaí are not releasing for operational reasons.

A man in his 20s who was arrested remains detained at a Garda station in Cork under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A number of scenes being examined by the Garda Technical Bureau have been preserved.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at Midleton Garda Station.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward or for other information that may assist their inquiries.
