Gardaí seize fireworks worth €20,000 ahead of Halloween

Fireworks worth about €20,000 have been seized in Sligo amid a crackdown by gardaí ahead of Halloween.

Shortly after 6.30pm on Wednesday evening, gardaí discovered a large quantity of fireworks during a search of a house in Sligo town.

In total, about €20,000 worth of illegal fireworks were seized, along with a small quantity of suspected cocaine.

The seizure was part of Operation Tombola, which sees gardaí work with partners and stakeholders to increase understanding of the harm fireworks may cause as Halloween approaches.

The sale, possession or use of fireworks in the Republic is illegal.

It is also illegal to possess any fireworks that may have been legally purchased outside of the jurisdiction and then brought into the State.

Gardaí are reminding the public that they will confiscate any fireworks found, and those found with them are also liable to prosecution.
