Update 1pm: The community of Youghal has experienced a “huge shock” following the news of a fatal assault in the East Cork town.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 9.50pm yesterday, took place at a commercial premises on North Main St.

The man, aged in his 30s, who was fatally assaulted during the incident, was transported to Cork University Hospital for the treatment of serious injuries, but was later pronounced dead.

A man, aged in his 20s, has since been arrested in relation to the incident, and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in county Cork.

Speaking to The Echo, Fine Gael Cork East TD Noel McCarthy said that his thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this “very difficult” time.

“I am devastated to hear the news, and obviously there are huge concerns in Youghal about it,” said Mr McCarthy.

“I am thinking of the family on this very sad occasion, obviously my thoughts are with them during this very difficult time - I am so sorry to hear what happened.” 

Fianna Fáil Cork East TD James O’Connor said that the people of Youghal are in disbelief following the fatal attack.

“This morning’s news came as a huge shock to the community of Youghal,” said Mr O’Connor.

“This sort of incident does not happen in Youghal.

“The community is in 100% of the emergency services and local gardaí for the work they have had to do over last night and this morning, for what has been an incredibly difficult incident.”

Earlier: A man has been arrested following a fatal assault in Youghal last night.

At approximately 9:50pm, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to an assault at a commercial premises on North Main Street.

A man, aged in his 30s, was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding his death.

A man in his 20s has since been arrested and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in County Cork.

A number of scenes are being preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. 

The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a postmortem examination will be arranged in due course.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Midleton Garda Station. 

A family liaison officer will be assigned to the family of the deceased.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing.
