The first of 107 cruise ships set to berth at Cork ports sailed into Cobh this morning to herald the beginning of this year’s cruise season, which is expected to generate €17m in revenue for the region between April and November.
Cork will host the largest number of cruise visits across Irish ports this year.
The MS Ambition, with its arrival today, is the first of a total of 93 liners to sail into the Port of Cork, while an additional 14 cruise ships will be berthing in Bantry during the season.
The liner, measuring 709ft with capacity for around 1,200 guests, will be making a total of four visits to Cork during the season and will bring it to a close in November with its final visit.
The overall economic benefit to the region is substantial, with €17m in revenue expected over the season as each enger spends an average of €81 while ashore and crew spend an average of €27.
Port of Cork chief commercial officer Conor Mowlds described the MS Ambition as the first of an “exceptional line-up of vessels” to visit Cork this year from locations such as the US, Canada, and various destinations across Europe.
Toddy Stafford, president of Cobh and Harbour Chamber, said each ship brought a vibrant energy to the town.
