Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel told The Echo that the status yellow rain warning issued by Met Éireann this morning would mostly affect motorists: “We’re expecting the rain in Cork to begin about midday today, and that rain is coming from the remnants of Storm Martinho which brought flooding in parts of Portugal and Spain the last couple of days.

“Thankfully we wont see similar impacts in of quantity of rain here, but certainly enough to lead to the issuing of a weather warning. The impacts we can expect are some localised spot flooding in one or two places.

“We don’t have to worry about river flooding, there’s been such dry conditions of late that the water levels are quite low, and similarly the soils are not particularly saturated at present so there’s a lot of absorption potential there for the rain to get soaked up.

“There might be some localised spot flooding on roads that could lead to tricky driving conditions, and when it’s been dry for a while then oils and other materials can build up, so the first rain can make roads particularly slippery.”

In of wind speeds, he explained: “There could be some gusty winds at coastal fringes for a time, but we’re not expecting anything above 50 to 60km/h from this system of low pressure, it’s more so about the precipitation. We could see 30 to 40mm of rainfall over mountains in west and north Cork, but across the county, we’re looking at 20 to 30mm in general over 24 to 36 hours.”
