One of Cork’s most important cultural institutions has unveiled a major initiative that will expand the opportunities afforded to professional visual artists.

The Crawford Art Gallery has announced the inaugural Gibson Travelling Fellowship Award, a €25,000 triennial award.

Every three years, it will offer a selected professional visual artist the means to travel abroad and cultivate international relationships. The award is a legacy of one of the most significant gifts made to the Crawford Art Gallery.

In 1919, Joseph Stafford Gibson (1837-1919) bequeathed his collections and a fund to enrich the holdings of the gallery and to provide a travel scholarship to talented artists from across Munster.

Mary McCarthy, director of the Crawford Art Gallery, said the award was a major initiative on the part of the gallery.

“We are thrilled to offer this opportunity in memory of Joseph Stafford Gibson, whose legacy is one of fostering artistic growth and global engagement,” she said.

“This award is a chance for talented artists to expand their horizons, connect with international networks, and bring fresh perspectives to their work. This award aims to foster cross-cultural collaborations that will not only elevate the individual artist but also contribute to the broader arts landscape in Ireland.”

Crawford Art Gallery is currently closed to the public to enable a major redevelopment plan.
