‘His loss will be deeply felt’: Tributes paid following death of UCC lecturer Gabriel Doherty

Tributes were paid following the announcement today of the death of UCC history lecturer and author Gabriel Doherty as the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin, described him as "an outstanding historian". 

A graduate of Oxford University where he earned a BA and University of Galway where he was awarded a Master’s degree, Mr Doherty was a widely published historian having edited two books, De Valera’s Irelands and 1916 – The Long Revolution, and having contributed numerous articles for historical journals.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin, himself a UCC history graduate, described Mr Doherty as “an outstanding historian” and said he was “shocked and saddened” to hear of his death.

“It’s very, very sad news and my sympathies go to his family,” said Mr Martin.

UCC President, Professor John O’Halloran also described Mr Doherty as an "outstanding historian" who had "deepened our understanding of key moments in Irish history".

“He played a significant role in the recent Decade of Centenaries commemorations and a leading role in research, teaching and examining in his field,” said Professor O’Halloran.

“Much ired and loved, his loss will be deeply felt in our community.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Gill, daughters Meabh and Úna, and son Oscar as well as his friends and colleagues.” 

Douglas GAA, where Mr Doherty was a committee member and mentor, took to social media to express their shock and sympathy. 

Street league games, a meeting of the LGFA review committee and the club shop were cancelled as a mark of respect.
