Cork's John Creedon ‘very grateful’ as listener figures rise

One of Cork’s favourite broadcasters has thanked his listeners as his RTÉ radio show has continued to gain audience share in the most recent national listenership figures.

The latest JNLR (t National Listener Research) figures show that Cork broadcaster John Creedon’s weeknight RTÉ Radio 1 show is thriving, with an average of 59,000 listeners, representing an increase of 3,000 on the previous year.

Coming from RTÉ Cork’s city centre studios on Father Mathew Quay, the programme offers an eclectic mixture of music which can often defy easy characterisation, delivered in a warm and chatty style that Mr Creedon has, in the past, said comes from working in his family shop on Devonshire Street.

The northsider told The Echo he was delighted with the latest JNLR figures.

“It’s hugely encouraging for national radio to trade successfully from Cork! 

“I’m very grateful for everyone’s ,” he said.

Peter Woods, head of RTÉ Radio 1, said the station remained strong through the week and weekends, with current affairs, music and arts programmes all performing well.

“John Creedon’s show is just short of 60,000 listeners now, which is a remarkable achievement,” he said.

Another Cork broadcaster, Brendan O’Connor, will be happy with the latest JNLR figures, as his Saturday morning show has 342,000 listeners, up 7,000 on last year, with 339,000 listeners tuning in on Sunday, which is up 16,000 on 2024.

Other RTÉ Radio 1 programmes performed well, with Morning Ireland still Ireland’s most listened-to radio programme, with 465,000 listeners, up 2,000 year-on-year.

Close behind is Today with Claire Byrne, the second most listened-to programme in the country, with 342,000 listeners tuning in every weekday, up 11,000 year-on-year.

Liveline with Joe Duffy jumped 5,000 listeners, up to 307,000 listeners.

Oliver Callan’s morning show has gained 2,000 listeners and now has 338,000, some 4,000 more than his predecessor Ryan Tubridy had during his final full year in that slot.
