Mahon Tidy Towns held their inaugural street feast on Sunday, May 26 and, despite the weather, the event was a huge success.
With live music, face-painting and plenty of food and beverages, locals enjoyed the area’s first street feast event at Mahon Community Centre.
As well as a host of local dishes, the Ukrainian community in Mahon brought flavours from their country, giving the local event a global feel.
A spokesperson for Mahon Tidy Towns, who were among the organisers, said:
“Due to weather conditions we had to move from outside to inside the Mahon Community Centre. The entertainment was from Coola Boola, a local band who did a live set and a playlist set to entertain all ages.
“A local lady from Ballinure Way did face painting which children enjoyed, getting to have their favourite characters done.
“Mahon’s first street feast was a fantastic success for the community, everyone dancing, chatting and enjoying themselves,” she added.
“Local residents of Mahon, Blackrock and residents from Ballinure Way brought along their Ukrainian traditional dishes in traditional dress.
“Cllr Terry Shannon and Cllr Des Cahill came along to the celebrations and Chris O’Leary brought spot prizes for our free raffle for everyone who attended.
“We would like to thank all our sponsors: St Michael’s Credit Union, Ringmahon Rangers, Mahon Community Association, Mahon CDP, The Red Cove, Cllr Terry Shannon and Des Cahill, Cork City Partnership, The Rainbow Club Community Cafe, Cork City Council, Ringmahon Stores, Mizzoni’s Mahon Takeaway, Chris O’Leary and Street Feast.
“Thank you to volunteers of Mahon Tidy Towns and Mahon Association, Mahon Community Garda Karen Ring and Mary Gordon for helping.
“A new Mahon Street Feast tradition has just begun. We look forward to planning for Mahon Street Feast 2025 which we hope will be even bigger.”
