THE 18th annual Cork Simon Golf Classic is due to take place next month at Monkstown Golf Club.

The charity fundraiser has accumulated over €400,000 since its inception, with all funds going towards those who avail of Cork Simon services.

With the number of people turning to those services for help at unprecedented levels, figures revealed by the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage show that 532 adults accessed emergency accommodation across the county in February, an increase of 8% in the last 24 months.

Taking place on May 23, the fundraiser will see Vision Contracting returning as sponsor for a renewed second three-year term. Speaking on the organisation of the fundraiser, volunteer committee member and director of Vision Contracting Mick Allen said: “There’s great synergy and camaraderie on the committee. It’s a great event and a great cause and we are proud to be associated.”

Chair of the volunteer organising committee, Finbar Gannon, said: “I have been involved as a volunteer with Cork Simon over a number of decades at this stage. Never was the need for their services so acute to our friends in our city that are more vulnerable.

“We would like to thank our sponsors and all those who this fundraising effort. They can be assured that the monies raised will be put to good use.”

“Given the current housing crisis, it is more important than ever to lend our and continue the fight against homelessness in Cork,” said volunteer committee member, Fiona McKiernan.

“I’ve been involved in organising the annual event on behalf of Arup since 2006. It has been a great opportunity every year to help organise and raise much needed funds to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.”

Teams of four can sign up for €500 per team or can sponsor a tee box for €150.
