THE annual Young at Heart Inter-generational table quiz will take place on Tuesday, October 17, at 1pm at the City Hall.

This is a free event, the aim being to connect together younger and older generations. Each team comprises two Transition Year students and two older people from the community.

Last year more than 60 teams from all over Cork city and county took part in an event that is growing and growing.

The combined knowledge of the different generations produce a powerful battle of wits as communities pitch their skills and knowledge.

Competition and ambition meet fun and laughter over the afternoon. Complimentary refreshments will be provided and they aim to finish by 4.30pm approx.

The quiz is sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care and was started by Phil Goodman and the Young at Heart Group in Douglas and has grown from there to what it has become today.

The Echo is a media partner of the event.

Phil Goodman of Douglas Young at Heart and organiser of the quiz, said by giving old and young the opportunity to work together, the Intergenerational Quiz builds up enduring relationships between the generations.

“It develops community links and harnesses the skills of a lifetime of learning,” she said.

“Taking part in intergenerational activities fosters social inclusion and participation, which are protective factors for ageing well and strengthen a sense of community belonging. Intergenerational activities benefit all age groups.

“Older participants are enabled to remain socially engaged and productive and younger participants benefit from the experience and wisdom of people who have lived longer than them,” she said.

Schools and older people from across the city and county are encouraged to take part in this popular event.
