A city centre street has been blocked off ahead of rush hour traffic due to a burst water main.

Henry Street, which is beside the Mercy Hospital, has been closed this afternoon due to a burst pipe.

Grenville Place, which is adjacent to Henry Street, is a main route for people crossing the city.

Fire Services attended the incident following a call around 2pm.

Two units from Cork city fire brigade attended the incident and were there for almost an hour and a half, leaving the scene at around 3.30pm.

The street which is between Grenville Place and Grattan St, remains closed heading into the evening traffic rush.

Speaking to The Echo, Irish Water said they were working with Cork City Council to fix the problem.

"The road has been closed on safety grounds, to allow crews to determine the extent of damage to the main and any associated damage to the structure of the road.

"The road will be re-opened once it is determined that it is safe to do so.

"We are working to divert water supplies to the area to minimise any loss of supply."
