New speed camera zones from Monday morning

There are a total of 1,322 safety camera zones nationwide and Gardaí say the devices are proven lifesavers.

Approximately 903 new safety camera zones will be in operation across the country from Monday morning, 6am, as Gardaí attempt to clamp down on speed-related collisions.

There are a total of 1,322 safety camera zones nationwide and Gardaí say the devices are proven lifesavers.

More than 1.5m speeding tickers have been issued since the introduction of safety cameras. In Cork, there will now be 138 zones where cameras can be placed. 

Speaking about the technology-driven initiative, Gardaí said the primary purpose of safety cameras is to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen injuries and save lives.

According to Gardaí, road deaths have decreased from 415 in 2000 to 148 in 2019. This shows a dramatic reduction in of risk and a huge increase in of road safety.

Operation GoSafe provides a minimum of 7,400 enforcement hours and a maximum of 100 survey hours per month across the country.

For the 7,400 enforcement hours, the cameras will operate from vans which are marked with high visibility reflective material and display a safety camera symbol.
