Detective Garda Ian Breen objected to bail because of the seriousness of the alleged incident which saw a number of Garda units including the armed unit arriving at the scene.
A residential area of Carrigaline had to be sealed off as a young man, who appeared to be armed with a handgun, shouted threats to shoot his father and shoot gardaí from a window of an apartment.
Conor Farrell applied to be released on bail at Cork District Court yesterday.
Detective Garda Ian Breen objected to bail because of the seriousness of the alleged incident which saw a number of Garda units including the armed unit arriving at the scene.
He is charged with production of an article capable of causing serious injury and causing criminal damage to his father’s home.
The teenager allegedly shouted that he had a firearm and was willing to use it to shoot his father and gardaí.
Solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher said that, significantly, the defendant’s father had — despite the prosecution evidence — ed him to say he wanted to post bail for his son to have him released from prison.
Residential areas including Ferney Court, Ferney Estate, and Ferney Rd had to be closed off to traffic while the incident was taking place.
Det Garda Breen said: “He is volatile. I would be extremely concerned.”
Gardaí arrested the teenager and charged him with a firearms charge and a count of causing criminal damage following an investigation of the incident at his father’s house in Carrigaline on Monday evening, July 15.
Conor Farrell, aged 19, of 9 Ferney Court, Carrigaline, Co Cork, has been in custody since that date in summer.
Conor Farrell said yesterday that after this time in jail, “I feel 100% without drugs or alcohol.”
Mr Kelleher said the young man had not wanted to get bail back in July: “He wanted to sort out his demons in July.”
Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail and remanded the accused in custody until September 23 for directions from the DPP at Cork District Court.
Mr Farrell was charged that on Monday, July 15, at his home at Ferney Court, while committing an offence, namely criminal damage, and in the course of a dispute, he produced, in a manner likely to intimidate another person, an article capable of inflicting serious injury, namely a black handgun, contrary to the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
The second charge was that Mr Farrell intentionally or recklessly caused criminal damage to a €400 flatscreen television at the family home.
