The cyclist killed in a collision in Co Kildare on Easter Sunday described as the “gentlest of souls” has been named.

Gar Fennelly of Rutland Terrace, Bennekerry was involved in a collision with a car at Knocknagee, close to Carlow town, just over the county border, shortly before 11.30am.

Mr Fennelly, who was aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. His remains were taken to Naas General Hospital where a post-mortem has been performed. No other injuries were reported.

The road near Knocknagee was closed for several hours while a forensic examination of the scene took place.

The single man will repose at McGuill’s Funeral Home in Bennekerry from 4pm on Wednesday, concluding with prayers at 7.30pm.

His Funeral Mass will be held at St Mary’s Church at 11am, with burial afterwards in the ading cemetery.

The gardening enthusiast is survived by his brothers and sisters Rita, Joe, Pauline, Danny, Patricia, Teresa, Thomas and Jenny, step-brothers and sisters Georgina, Ernie, Mavis, Eugene and Martin.

Mr Fennelly was described by a mourner on rip.ie as “a lovely man, the gentlest of souls, while another added: “(The) most helpful and kindest human being I ever met. He was a true friend and always there to help. Rest in peace my friend.”

Meanwhile, Gardaí continue to seek witnesses to the incident, in particular any road s or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), and who were travelling in the area on the date between 10:30am and 11:30am.
